- Dear Macintosh User:
-
- This is the most exciting time in the history of the Macintosh. For the first
- time, the hallmark ease-of-use and versatility of the Mac is being combined
- with workstation class CPU performance. This new breed of Macintosh
- computers will truly change the way people interact with personal
- computers, and throw open the doors to new types of software applications
- that previously were unimaginable.
-
- 3D graphics is going to be one of those applications. Previously, 3D has
- not entered the mainstream because people have perceived it as being too
- hard and too slow. (In fact, these were related problems, it was too hard
- partially because it was too slow, and vice-versa.) With the Macintosh on
- PowerPC, Apple has taken care of the “too slow” part. The incredible
- floating point performance of the 601 chip allows us to render 3D graphics
- and animations at lightening speed.
-
- At Specular, our job is battling the “too hard” aspect of 3D. We feel we’ve
- done a good job on that with Infini-D, and packed in a serious amount of
- 3D power at the same time.
-
- Like all art, creating 3D graphics is an iterative process. This means that
- you try out an idea, render it, think about it, tweak your lighting and
- camera position, etc. The Macintosh on PowerPC will bring enormous
- speed and flexibility to this process, and allow artists to easily add the
- impact of 3D to their artwork.
-
- I’ve always felt that 3D is actually EASIER to use than 2D. I see graphic
- artists constantly struggling to try and realistically draw 3D perspective in
- a 2D environment, doggedly maintaining that it’s “easier” this way.
- Furthermore, if you illustrate a packaging comp or a corporate logo in 2D,
- you’re stuck. If you want to view it from another perspective, you have to
- re-draw it.
-
- When you work in 3D, you’re working with models, not drawing. This
- means you can view your model from any perspective, creating an
- unlimited variety of images from a single model. You can get dramatic
- effects by changing the position or color of lights, changing the position or
- lens size on your camera, or changing the attributes of the surfaces of your
- objects. You can even sequence an animated fly-through, complete with
- shadows, reflections, and transparencies!
-
- We invite you to experience the magic of 3D with this complimentary
- demo version of Infini-D. Combined with the incredible processing power
- you’ve just purchased in your new Power Macintosh, Infini-D will
- throw open a wonderful new dimension in which you can create dazzling
- images and animations. We think you’re going to love it!
-
- We hope you enjoy this demo version of Infini-D. For more information
